bicycling in the future

Nowadays, there seems to be a constant stream of new and innovative technology. From smartphones to smartwatches to self-driving cars, people are always looking for new and easier ways to go about their daily lives. Cyclists are no different. We are eager to take advantage of new gear and equipment. But what about the roads and highways we ride on? Bicycling in the future may benefit from revamped bike lanes and other advanced pathways. One recent article in a Salt Lake newspaper discusses the possibility of a “bicycle superhighway.” As Utah’s Bicycle Lawyers, we are very interested in knowing how new developments may keep tomorrow’s cyclists safe.

Bicycling in the Future: Bike Lanes and Beyond

Utah is one of the fastest-growing states in the country. This increase in population shows no signs of slowing down. More people equals more cars, which equals greater air pollution and increased vehicle traffic. The state government is supporting studies to find out how to encourage alternative modes of transportation, such as cycling. One possible option is creating a “bike superhighway.” This superhighway would be a roadway just for bikes, separate from the congested and dangerous freeway.

This souped-up bike lane would be a large and expensive project, but it would encourage more people to get on their bikes and ditch their cars. Less cars and more bikes on the road would reduce vehicle emissions, decrease traffic congestion, and promote a healthy and rewarding habit. Another possibility is offering short-term bike rentals to help commuters get from public transit to their final destinations.

This is just one of the ways in which bicycling in the future may become easier and more useful in everyday life. Any step towards making riding safer is a step in the right direction! Separate bike highways would help minimize serious bike accidents and injuries. In our work as Utah’s Bicycle Lawyers, we see too often how cycling injuries can devastate victims.
