Bike and Car _ 3682130320_cdabd441c1 _ by Richard Masoner on FlickrThe purpose of a bicycle accident lawyer is to represent the bicyclists who are injured due to the negligence of another person. A few questions most people may have are:

  • What is involved in a bicycle accident?
  • Is this sort of accident different than a vehicular accident?
  • Is traveling by bicycle more dangerous than driving in a vehicle?

Though it is hard to answer questions such as the danger level of commuting by bicycle, all these questions can be answered through understanding the statistical data collected on bicycle accidents.

A Bicyclist Attorney’s Answers

A bicycle accident involves a situation where a bicyclist is struck either by a vehicle or anything else that could harm the bicyclist.  This particular accident involving a bicyclist is not much different than a vehicular accident other than the fact a bicycle is involved in the incident.  In order to answer the question on whether bicycling is more dangerous than driving in a vehicle is hard to answer due to the mass array of statistics; however, kenkifer.com states a few statistical facts from 1992 of how bicyclists are usually injured and why:

  • 5.1% of bicyclists pull out of a driveway and failed to look both ways to make sure that the road is clear and safe.
  • 4.3% of bicyclists who turn left failed to look behind them before moving into the lane.
  • 3.9% of bicyclists get struck from the rear.  Riding on the sidewalk is safer.
  • 2.7% of bicyclists traveling on the wrong side of the road (against traffic).
  • 1.4% of bicyclists traveling on the wrong side of the road also turn in front of on-coming vehicles.
  • 1.3% of bicyclists are struck by a motorist who fails to see the bicyclist on the road.  This sort of accident happens to mostly adult cyclists.
  • 1.2% of bicyclists lose control and cause the crash.
  • 0.8% of bicyclists made a normal left turn but ignored on-coming traffic.
  • 0.6% of bicyclists are caused by a motorist who lost control of the car and struck the bicyclist.
