sidewalk cycling things to consider

For beginning cyclists, it may seem safer to ride on the sidewalk than on the road. Utah, unlike many other states, does allow cyclists to use sidewalks — with some rules and exceptions. But, just because it is legal doesn’t mean it is always the safest option. In our work as the Utah Bicycle Lawyers, we see many sidewalk cycling accidents. There are some important things to consider when deciding where to ride.

Potential Dangers of Sidewalk Cycling

Below are some of the possible dangers of sidewalk cycling, as well as some benefits of its alternatives.

Pedestrians

Even if you feel more at ease riding on the sidewalk, pedestrians around you may be more nervous. As a cyclist, you take up more space and move much faster than pedestrians. The risk of a collision increases in this situation, so if you choose to ride on the sidewalk, use extra caution.

Vehicles

Riding on the sidewalk makes you somewhat invisible to vehicles on the road. Drivers often do not expect cyclists to ride through crosswalks, and collisions may occur. The cyclists do not often cause these collisions, but they happen nonetheless — so it is good to be prepared.

Protected Bike Lanes

Protected bike lanes are gaining traction in Salt Lake City, making the city safer for cyclists, drivers, and pedestrians. This includes a protected lane on 300 South, one of the busiest roads in the city. Plans are also in the works to add more protected bike lanes in the city. These lanes are some of the safest options for cyclists commuting or otherwise riding in the city.
