Many cyclists in Utah are preparing for the month of May, as it is National Bike Month.  Utah’s community has come together to offer cyclists a series of competitive rides, training courses, and other fun events for the month-long celebration.  Here are just a few events to mark on your calendar, but before riding, be sure to get your free copy of our Utah Bicycle Accident Handbook

The Gran Fondo Moab

The beautiful red rocks of Moab have long been a major attraction to cyclists around the country.  The Gran Fonda Moab event will kick off National Bike Week here in Utah on May 1st and 2nd with a 60 mile ride encompassing 5500 feet of climbing.  The route follows the mountain pass in Manti-La Sals, also known as Loop Road.  It will begin and end in Moab.   For more information on this race, visit www.granfondomoab.com

BCC Build Series – Basic Bike Skills

The Bonneville Cycling Club is hosting several classes throughout the month to help beginner cyclists master their skills.  The class meets for a 7, 10, or 15-mile loop ride, followed by a brief class session.  A new topic is covered each week, teaching beginner cyclists how to ride in traffic, avoid accidents, and proper bicycle maintenance.  Classes meet on May 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th.  For more information, visit www.bccutah.org

UTA Bike Bonanza

The UTA Bike Bonanza is a great event for the entire family to celebrate bicycling.  It runs from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday, May 14th at the Gallivan Center.  Bring the entire family for free food, fun activities, and demonstrations of the latest bikes.

Salt Lake City/County Mayor’s Bike to Work Day

Take your bicycle to Liberty Park on Tuesday, May 18 to join County Mayor Peter Corroon and City Mayor Ralph Becker for a leisurely ride under a police escort to the County Government Center and then to Library Square.  The ride begins at 7:30 AM and all participants will be greeted with free bagels for breakfast!

National Bike to Work Day

Although you will have to make your own breakfast for the National Bike to Work Day, it is still a wonderful way to show your solidarity with the cycling community nationwide, save money on gas, and begin your day with healthy exercise.  On May 21st, strap on your helmet and take your bicycle to work.  You may enjoy it so much that you’ll start biking to work every day!

Bicycle Commuter Master Class

This class is a wonderful asset to Utah residents who commute to work on a regular basis.  Presented by the Salt Lake Bike Collective, the class offers detailed instruction on how to commute in urban settings.  Learn how to properly ride with the flow of traffic, position yourself in the correct part of the lane, and reduce your safety risk.  The class meets on Saturday mornings (May 15th, 22nd, and 29th) from 8:30 – 11:30 AM in Salt Lake City.  Tuition is $15.  To register, visit www.slcbikecollective.com/programs/classes

For more details on upcoming events for National Bike Month, visit the website www.utahbikemonth.org.  Please remember to be safe and wear a helmet every time you ride.  We hope to see you at some of these events!

New Bicycle Law In Utah

On Tuesday, February 2, 2010, House Bill 91 failed after a tie vote. The bill, sponsored by Representative Carol Spackman-Moss, would allow bicyclists to ride through red lights after stopping and checking for traffic.  HB 91 has been a controversial bill since its inception even from within the Utah cycling community. On one hand, cyclists do get stuck at red lights for long periods of time as they don’t weigh enough for traffic sensors to work. Opponents of the bill remind us that many motorcyclists and scooter operators face the same problem but it remains illegal for them to run red lights. Should bicycles follow the same law as vehicles?

Another argument for HB 91 brings up the important point that some traffic signals switch back to red before a cyclist is able to pedal fast enough through the intersection. If HB 91 passed, bicyclists would not be breaking the law if they continued through the intersection. As Utah bicycle accident attorneys we pose this question: If bicyclists continue through an intersection, what is going to stop a motor vehicle, traveling at high speeds from a possible collision with the bike rider? Who would then be responsible for the accident—the bicyclist was going against a red light or the motorist who had green? With the Utah accidents cases we have seen, we find that motorists are more likely going to proceed through the intersection if they have a green light and will fail to notice pedestrians or cyclists for that matter.

Bicycle safety is the main concern on all sides of the argument. Lawmakers, public, cyclists and motorists do want to ensure that Utah accidents are not increased by this legislation. Consequently, this proposed legislation needs additional research and study before it is brought up again before law makers.
