Summer is right around the corner and now is the time for you to break out the bikes and go for a ride. Cycling can be a great way to get outside and spend some time as a family. Simply put, it is a fun activity for everyone. That being said, riding with your family can be a tricky task because you have to juggle different skill levels and expectations. So in this article we hope to offer a few helpful tips on ways to cycle as a family.

Have Fun and Be Safe!

Having fun is the most important thing you can do as you ride together. Making this a priority will help you and your children to make safe choices and just enjoy the ride. So:

  • Be prepared
    • Staying hydrated is important, so make sure you have enough water for everyone.
      • Carry the water for your kids. That way you know they are drinking it.
    • Bring things your kids like to eat. For example, granola bars, trail mix and fruit snacks.
    • Bring along a first aid and repair kit just in case something goes wrong.
  • Pick a destination
    • This can be a new park, a snow cone stand or somewhere up the canyon.
    • You and your family will have something to look forward to and you will all know where you are going.
  • Keep it short
    • The distance is really up to you and your family. The key is making it manageable for everyone.
    • Start short and build your way up.
  • Wear helmets
    • Set a good example for your children and wear your helmet. If they see you doing it, they will want to also.
    • Make sure that each person has a helmet that fits them and that they like.
  • Be safe
    • Teach your kids to obey traffic laws as they ride.
    • Have your kids ride in front of you. Cars can see you better and you can keep an eye on your children.
    • Choose a safe route. There are many trails here in Utah that are set apart for bikers and walkers.
