Not too long ago, we wrote a post about some of our favorite cycling books and movies. But what about the times when bikes just show up briefly in one or two great scenes? At Utah Bicycle Lawyers, we love to see bikes in movies of all kinds — from comedies to Westerns. This post identifies some of these movies and their cycling scenes. Bikes in Movies: 4 Great Scenes
Here are some of our favorite bicycling moments in popular films.
- The Goonies
This is an extremely popular film, for good reason. We love it because it features bikes in many of its scenes. In one of our favorite moments, Brand borrows a girl’s bike, which has training wheels, in order to get his younger brother and his friends out of trouble.
- Napoleon Dynamite
“Shocks…. Pegs…. Lucky.” Napoleon Dynamite is one of the most quotable movies of all time. Our favorite part, naturally, is when Napoleon asks Pedro if he takes his bike off of any sweet jumps. This movie taught us an important lesson: only jump your bike off ramps that you know will not break!
- E.T.
Of course, we had to include E.T., with its famous “flying bikes” scene. The silhouette of the bikes against the moon is one of our favorite images of bikes in movies. While our bikes may not fly, cycling can certainly take us to new and exciting places.
- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
This classic Western features a simple, but romantic bike scene that shows how nice a bike ride can be. Featuring the song, “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head,” this scene is a large part of why the movie is still so popular.
